Wedding Sweets!

We completed the last (major) piece of our wedding puzzle! Our cake/sweets contract is signed and let me tell you, I could not be more excited!

Bleeding Heart Bakery (also on Facebook here) is doing our cake/cupcakes and cakeballs. Yes, you read right, we’re doing all three! Why? Why NOT?! We’re getting a two-tiered cake with a 3D fondant component, 200 mini cupcakes and 150 cakeballs! Sorry I can’t tell you too much about the cake, it’s a surprise for our guests and even our mothers!

This awesome little bakery is not your Momma’s bakery! One article described it as, “The certified-organic bakery is where Marilyn Manson might pick up cupcakes.” I don’t know if I would quite go that far but they are definitely known for the unknown, or maybe un-thought of! According to BHB’s website, “The idea behind BHB was to use local, organic and sustainable ingredients to provide amazing and thought provoking pastry that was as delicious as it was beautiful and cutting edge.” I believe they have every right to say mission accomplished!

So, I have to tell my funny little story about BHB. My mother is not someone who goes nuts over desserts. She loves her chocolate, but usually a small piece of good dark chocolate and she’s happy as a clam. The first time we ever went to BHB it was my mom, my niece and I. We bought a variety of items to take home and try. We got home and we were cutting up the various cupcakes so we each got a bite or two…at the end of this process there was a bit of a Veruca Salt cupcake left, we all eye the cupcake, eye each other, eye the cupcake and then I’m pretty sure had I not moved my mother would have taken my head off to get to the cupcake!! It was the funniest thing in the world, but that’s really just how good these cupcakes are!

The best part about doing our wedding with them? We can come up with any flavor combination we can dream of! Since we’ll be in June berries will be in season, chocolate is always in season and we can dream big! Bananas foster? No prob!! Bacon chocolate? Sounds good! Blueberry Basil? May have to give that one a whirl! I am super pumped!! And I was assured that all we have to do is declare our favorites and they will make a special little box just for my fiancee and I to ensure we get our must-haves! I will keep you updated on the flavors we choose and the final cake design after the wedding!!

Cupcakes and Pasta and…oh bite me

The following story is true, there may be embellishments, but the basic premise is true…ok, I’ll probably exaggerate, but my point remains the same.

We all know my theory on this diet crap, I’ll do it, whatever, I need to. Got it. So yesterday, if you read, I cut chips from my lunches. K, no biggie except I miss my chips. I get a phone call from a very dear friend of mine who is basically like an older (only in age, not in maturity) version of me saying her and her husband were downtown and bought some Sprinkles cupcakes and if I would like, I could come over after work to have one.

SIDEBAR! I’ve heard so much about these Sprinkles cupcakes and how they are just to die for and how we should really just create chaos until we all get as many cupcakes as we can eat…but, I digress…

So, it’s a Monday, fiancee has school, it’s not a work out day, ok, I’ll go visit and have a cupcake and some gossip! While I’m there my dear fiancee calls, and here is our conversation:

  • Me: Hey
  • Him: Hey, you texted, so I thought I’d call, what are you up to?
  • Me: I’m being raped by the puppies
  • Him: Oh, so you’re at L****’s?
  • Me: Yeah
  • Him: What are you doing there?
  • Me: Just visiting [notice me trying NOT to mention the cupcakes…]
  • Him: Why?
  • Me: Well….she bought Sprinkles cupcakes…
  • Him: I thought you were on a diet
  • Me: I am!
  • Him: Whatever *click*

Oh, wait, I’m sorry, did I ask for your dieting tips? Do you know what I ate earlier in the day? Do you know how much I work out? NO!! And I don’t tell you for a reason!! Because you get up my butt and make me feel guilty and fat for not being the perfect dieter!I have like 13 sweet teeth, it’s like my kryptonite! I can give up chips, not happily, but I can, I can give up most fried foods, I can eat less, but take away my sweets and there will be problems!

SIDEBAR!!! I love my fiancee with all my heart, and I know he loves me and that he says these things because he truly cares about my health, but could we take a more positive approach than a negative one??

Here’s another conversation from yesterday when he got home from school:

  • Him: You had a cupcake today, and one this weekend!
  • Me: yeah?
  • Him: And you had pasta yesterday and today
  • Me: and?
  • Him: that’s carbs!
  • Me: And we need carbs to live…
  • Him: but two days in a row?

Um, yes, two days in a row! I made a big batch of pasta with left over chicken (protein), a little bit of EVOO. A. I don’t waste food, B. it’s easier to make one big batch and eat it throughout the week and C. NOT ALL CARBOHYDRATES ARE BAD!!

Carbohydrates are the most common source of energy in living organisms. The Institute of Medicine recommends that American and Canadian adults get between 45–65% of dietary energy from carbohydrates. Foods high in complex carbohydrates include breads, pastas, beans, potatoes, bran, rice, and cereals. Dietary guidelines generally recommend that complex carbohydrates, and such nutrient-rich simple carbohydrate sources such as fruit (glucose or fructose) and dairy products (lactose) make up the bulk of carbohydrate consumption. Thank you very much!!

I guess this is just my vent, bottom line, I’m trying to make better decisions, but I’m not going to starve and I’m certainly NOT turning down my friend’s hospitality when she brings me a cupcake from Sprinkles.

Plus, I think it was a good exercise in comparative cupcakes. I am looking for who’s going to do my wedding…I mean, if I’ve got to take one for the team and try out a few different cupcakes, guess I’ll just have to! I want the prefect wedding!! And BTW, I think I’m sticking with the original plan and going with Bleeding Heart Bakery for my wedding…Not going to lie, probably going to buy their book too- Who You Callin’ Cupcake: 75 In-Your-Face Recipes that Reinvent the Cupcake!!

So, on that note, I’m going to go drink some water, pee out another pound or two and have a DAMN CUPCAKE!!!!
